We had a wonderfully successful Youth Music Night at the Floyd Country Store! The show was held on Saturday March 30th, and several of our Youth Stringband students performed on stage, and they were joined by our friends from Surrey NC, The Biscuit Eaters!
Luke and Samuel Spencer opened the show, kicking off with songs they’ve learned from the Sunday afternoon Old Time Jams at the Floyd Country Store, including “Crook Brothers Breakdown” and “Cumberland Gap”. They played an excellent version of “Boatin’ Up the Big Ole Sandy,” a song they learned last month during our Youth Stringband program from guest teacher, Jason Phillips.
The Old Time Water Snakes played next. This group is comprised of Rochelle Grim (mandolin), Emmerson Brantingham (fiddle), and Acacia Fugate (banjo). The Water Snakes played a variety of songs they’ve learned in the local Old Time community, including “Old Black Choo Choo” and “Goodbye My Little Bonnie”. They also played songs they have learned during our Youth Stringband program, including “Red Mountain Wine” and “Cindy”.
Finally, we invited our friends The Biscuit Eaters to the stage, and they gave us a great show! The Biscuit Eaters are a 7-piece bluegrass band from Surrey, NC. Meredith (guitar) and Jason (bass) are joined by 5 of their children, ranging from Samuel, age 15 (mandolin), to Molly, age 6 (fiddle, singing, and dancing). Other members include Jo age 12 (banjo), Maggie Jane age 10 (guitar), Silas age 8 (fiddle). The show featured several classic Old Time tunes and a few Meredith has written herself, and the dance floor stayed full during their show!
The show concluded with The Old Time Water Snakes and Samuel and Luke joining The Biscuit Eaters to play “I’ll Fly Away”. We can’t wait to do this again soon!
