Tim Thornton

mountain dulcimer, guitar

A Southwest Virginia native, Tim has won ribbons for singing and playing guitar, bass, banjo, dobro, autoharp and dulcimer at fiddlers’ conventions from Happy Valley to Buena Vista. Most of those ribbons were for playing a dulcimer, including seventeen top ten finishes and one blue ribbon at the Old Fiddlers Convention in Galax.

He’s played behind renowned old time fiddler Earl White and five-time world champion fiddler Buddy Pendleton. Half of the old-timey duo Sula’s Front Porch and a member of the cosmic Appalachian string band Eight Point Star, Tim also plays bass with The Reed Tradition, a band dedicated to preserving and promoting the tunes and songs of legendary fiddler Henry Reed
and his family. Tim teaches guitar, bass and dulcimer with Montgomery Junior Appalachian Musicians and teaches Appalachian Studies at Radford University.
