Hanna Traynham is one of our instructors for the 2025 Old Time Music Get Together Camp. Hanna’s upbringing in Floyd County provides her a deep-seated appreciation for the region’s musical traditions. Her parents, Mac and Jenny Traynham, sang duets and played old time dances for countless gatherings and recorded a number of acclaimed albums. Mac taught Hanna to play Southwestern Virginia style clawhammer banjo and she learned rhythm guitar from Jenny. Early singing experiences among church congregations established her appreciation for old gospel music and honed her harmony skills.

Living in the Pacific Northwest and traveling abroad, Hanna embraced her musical background and made connections with various musical communities; she is a member of Seattle -based old time band, the Barn Owls and hosted six annual Gospel Events for Sinners and Saints in Portland.

As a professor of Ceramics and Sculpture at Roanoke College, Hanna’s extensive teaching experience in music and art emphasizes group engagement and individual growth. Hanna is invested in the continuation of the regions musical traditions, keeping the old sound alive while contributing her own.
