Lesser Known Versions of Beloved Chestnuts – Sammy Lind & Nadine Landry Old Time Fiddle and Guitar Workshop

Join us at The Floyd Country Store on Saturday, July 11, 2026 at 3:00 pm for a workshop with Sammy Lind and Nadine Landry!
Cost is $35 per person.

Chestnuts are tunes to break bread by – staples of community. They are the melodies that dancers hear a few notes of and know exactly what kind of fun and excitement is about to fill the air. In this workshop, Sammy and Nadine will teach a few unsung versions of chestnuts that will be a great addition to any old time musician’s repertoire.

We’ll start by gathering all together to hear a demonstration and brief history of the tunes that will be taught. We’ll then split into two groups: fiddle and guitar. Participants will spend half of the allotted time learning the melodies on the fiddle and how to accompany them on the guitar. We’ll reconvene at the end to jam the newly learned tunes!

The fiddle workshop, led by Sammy Lind, will focus on learning the melodies by ear, breaking them down phrase by phrase, with an emphasis on bowing. Alternate tunings will also be explored.

In Nadine’s guitar workshop, tools will be provided for accompanying the fiddle tunes, with an emphasis on the “boom-chuck” rhythm that is characteristic of old time guitar backup, gradually introducing bass lines without compromising the rhythm. Participants are encouraged to bring a capo.

The workshop will take place in the Community Room at The Floyd Country Store at 3pm on July 11, 2026. It will last approximately 90 minutes, and is designed for advanced players (see below for detailed description of skill level expected). Cost is $35 per person.

Fiddle players should be able to tune their instrument, know the scales of G, D, and A, and have some experience of learning by ear.

Guitar players should know the chord shapes in G & D (assuming players will have a capo for other keys), the basic grasp of the boom chuck rhythm, and use a pick.

About Sammy and Nadine:

Nadine Landry and Sammy Lind play traditional fiddle music that has been passed on for hundreds of years. Nadine was born and raised in a musical family on Quebec’s Gaspé Peninsula. Equally comfortable on guitar and upright bass, she has played in bands that perform old-time, honky-tonk, swing, and Cajun music. Born in Minnesota, Sammy has established himself as one of the most critically acclaimed old-time fiddle players in the USA. Their recordings reflect their versatility, as they alternate between fiddle, banjo, guitar, and accordion, while always staying true to the roots of traditional American music. Both Nadine and Sammy are members of the Portland, Oregon-based Foghorn Stringband. Whether playing with the Stringband or in duo format, Nadine and Sammy perform with energy and technical finesse.
