The 6th Annual Floyd Old Time Get Together was a huge success this past weekend! We had a blast learning new skills, catching up with old friends, making new friends, dancing, and jamming with members of the Old Time community from near and far.
The Floyd Old Time Music Get Together camp has become one of the world’s premiere old time music and dance learning experiences for music lovers from all over the world. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains and taking place early in the spring each year, folks who get together with us experience a wonderfully relaxing learning environment as springtime in Appalachia is bursting — flowers were blooming, and the weather was lovely!
Held at the Floyd Event Center, hosted by the Handmade Music School, and catered by the Floyd Country Store, the 6th Annual Old Time Get Together brought musicians from around the country together with a fantastic teaching staff. Our staff musicians Mac Traynham, Gina Dilg, Jared Boyd, and JoeBass Dajarnette were joined by guest teachers Reeb Willms, Caleb Klauder, Sammy Lind, Kalia Yeagle, Joseph Decosimo, Danny Knicely, and Hanna Traynham.
Teachers led classes in the mornings to teach intermediate and advanced skills and techniques on fiddle, banjo, mandolin, guitar, and singing. In the afternoons, we enjoyed skill-centered workshops, including ones on flatfooting, utilizing the thumb string in clawhammer banjo melody, bass runs for guitar players, and singing with the fiddle and banjo (plus a whole lot more)! Our evenings were filled with square-dancing, concerts, and lots of tune-playing opportunities. The food was fantastic, and we enjoyed the opportunity to relax and learn with so many great friends.
The weekend concluded with a Foghorn Stringband concert at the Floyd Country Store on March 23rd, and we’re already excited to do it again next year!
